A simple dal is more or less a favorite at any meal in an Indian household. Can you think that a plain lentil could be cooked in so many different ways?

Each Indian state has its own traditional dal recipes made from various varieties of lentils. Dal and Rice is the most tasty Indian comfort food in the world. Toor dal or Yellow Split Pigeon Pea served with onions , tomatoes and aromatic spices.

Ingredients

Pressure Cook

  • Toor Dal / Split Pigeon Pea's- 1.5 Cups

  • Salt - 1 Tsp

  • Turmeric - 1 Tsp

  • Water - 3 Cups

Masala

  • Ghee - 1 Tbsp

  • Cumin - 3 Tsp

  • Ginger - 1 Tbsp Chopped

  • Garlic - 1 Tbsp Chopped

  • Onion - 1 Big Chopped

  • Green Chillies - 5 Slit

  • Tomatoes - 3 medium Chopped

  • Salt - 1 Tsp

  • Kashmiri Red Chilli Powder - 2 Tsp

  • Kasoori Methi / Dried Fenugreek Leaves - 1 Tsp

  • Cilantro - 2 Tbsp

  • Garam Masala - 1 Tbsp

  • Water - 1 Cup

Tadka / Tempering

  • Ghee - 1 Tbsp

  • Cumin / Jeera - 1 Tsp

  • Hing / Asafoetida - 1/4th tsp

  • Garlic - 1 Tsp

  • Dry Red Chillies - 4

  • Cilantro

Recipe

  1. In a Big Pan on Medium Heat add Ghee.

  2. Once the Ghee is hot add Cumin seeds.

  3. When Cumin seeds start to crackle , add Ginger and Garlic.

  4. Cook for 1 to 2 minutes till the raw aroma of Ginger goes away.

  5. Now add Chopped Onion and Green Chillies.

  6. Cook Till Onions are Translucent and brown.

  7. Now Add Tomatoes and Salt. Mix Well and Cover with Lid.

  8. Cook for 3 to 4 minutes.

  9. Remove the Lid , tomatoes should be soft and cooked.

  10. Now Add Kashmiri Red Chilli Powder, Kasoori Methi and Chopped Dhaniya leaves. Mix Well.

  11. Add Dal and Water to the Masala. Mix Well.

  12. Now add Garam Masala mix well.

  13. Cover with Lid and cook for 3 minutes.

Tadka

  1. In a shallow pan, add Ghee.

  2. Once the Ghee is heated add cumin seeds and Hing.

  3. Once the Cumin starts to Crackle add Garlic and Dry Red Chillies.

  4. Cook till Garlic starts turning Brown.

  5. Add it on top of Dal.
